Founded in 1983, China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. (CNMC) is a large-scale central enterprise under the management of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council. Its major businesses include the development of nonferrous metal mineral resources, construction engineering, and the relevant trade and technological services. By the end of 2010, CNMC has assets amounting to 50.67 billion RMB. It possesses two listed companies in China, namely NFC (000758) and OTIC (000962). In fact, CNMC has been a pioneer among Chinese enterprises to implement the “going abroad” strategy and to carry out international investment and cooperation in nonferrous metal mineral resources field.

The nonferrous metal mining projects built and put into production abroad by CNMC include Chambishi Copper Mine in Zambia, Chambishi 150,000-ton copper smeltery, Chambishi Leach Plant, Chambishi Sulfuric Acid Plant, Tumurtin-Ovoo Zinc Mine in Mongolia, and Thai-China Lead-Antimony Alloy Plant in Thailand. The projects under construction and development include Zambia-China Economic & Trade Cooperation Zone, western ore body of Zambia Chambishi Copper Mine, Myanmar Tagaung Taung Nickel Mine, and bauxite in Laos. In addition, CNMC is negotiating a group of projects in venturous prospecting and development of nonferrous metal resources and carrying out overseas investment cooperation in various forms in nonferrous metal mining industries, which involve copper, aluminum, zinc, nickel, tantalum, niobium, and beryllium.

Now, CNMC is developing nonferrous metal mineral resources in countries around China and in central and southern Africa, and also in countries and regions with developed capital operation in mining industry. It possesses ten million tons of nonferrous metal resources and over 300 million tons of bauxite resources in overseas market and is now after nearly 80 million tons of heavy nonferrous metal resources and two billion tons of bauxite resources. CNMC is the Chinese enterprise that has carried out the most investment cooperation in overseas nonferrous metal mining industry. During the “Eleventh Five-year Plan” period, its investment in overseas market will exceed two billion US dollars and it will promote the export of more than 1.2 billion US dollars worth of Chinese equipment and materials.

The China-based enterprises subordinated to CNMC are also developing steadily and the group has realized integrated operation between its domestic and overseas businesses. In addition, it has established a favorable partnership with many Chinese provinces and cities, including Tianjin, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Ningxia, Jiangxi, and Guangxi. CNMC Hongtoushan Fushun Mining Group Co., Ltd. is the largest copper mine enterprise in northeast China. CNMC (Ningxia) Orient Group Co., Ltd. is China’s largest tantalum and niobium producing base and its only beryllium scientific research and production base, ranking third in size among tantalum smelting and processing enterprises in the world. CNMC Liuzhou Zinc Products Co., Ltd. is trying hard to build itself into a large-scale comprehensive nonferrous metal processing enterprise and establish a world famous zinc oxide brand. CNMC (Shenyang) Metallurgical Machinery Co., Ltd. is China’s base for producing nonferrous metal and steel and metallurgical machinery equipment. With three leading products, including diaphragm pump, multifunctional shop traveler, and nonferrous metal equipment, the company is the largest producer of diaphragm pumps in China, which are also of the best quality. In fact, its products enjoy over 90% of the domestic market share and are sold well in over a dozen countries. Now, drawing experience from Chifeng Kumba Hongye Zinc Smelting Project and Baiyinnuoer Lead-Zinc Mine, CNMC is constructing a large-scale nonferrous metal industrial base in north China.

CNMC enjoys a widespread prestige in international project contracting field. It has contracted and undertaken many major projects in several Asian and African countries and regions, including Iran Fayabu Iron Alloy Plant, Yazd Zinc Smeltery, Khatoon Abad Copper Smeltery, Jajarm Alumina Refinery, Arak Electrolytic Aluminum Plant, Vietnam Sin Quyen Copper Mine, Kazakhstan Electrolytic Aluminum Plant, Zambia KCM Shaft Project, and Algeria Expressway Project. NFC, a company controlled by CNMC, has for many consecutive years been included among the “Top 225 International Contractors” in the world by Engineering News Record (ENR) of the US and has been one of the “top 200 designing companies in the world”. China No. 15 Metallurgical Construction Co., Ltd. has constructed over 400 large and medium-sized projects in over 100 counties and cities of China’s 30 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions). It has won Lu Ban Award and silver award for national high-quality projects for many times and created a number of new records among Chinese enterprises. Now, backed by a group of superior businesses, including the overall contracting of NFC, construction of China No. 15 Metallurgical Construction Co., Ltd., design R&D of Shenyang Design and Research Institute and China Ruilin, supervision of the Xincheng Construction Supervision and Consulting Co., Ltd., and equipment manufacturing of Shenyang Metallurgy and Machinery Co., Ltd., CNMC has established a powerful coordinated service system for project contracting. With unique superiority and characteristics in construction project business, CNMC has gained certain prestige and influence in Asian project contracting market. Its performance has earned it extensive acknowledgement and trust inside and outside China.

CNMC’s relevant trade and service businesses cover over 20 nonferrous metal varieties such as copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, nickel, and gold and involve several industries, including energy, industrial chemicals, steel, building materials, coal and tourism, exposition, and hotel. It has established a favorable cooperation relationship with enterprises in over a dozen countries, including South Africa, the US, Turkey, the Philippines, Zambia, and Mongolia. It leads some important China-made electromechanical products and technologies into international market and has formed a trade service business layout accentuating key points and involving multivariate operations. By the end of 2008, the total asset, income from major businesses, and total profit of CNMC were 3.8 times, 3.5 times, and 3.5 times that in 2005, respectively.
