Serbia has positively commented on the Hungary-Serbia railway project which was launched by the two countries together with China in 2015, the Guangming Daily reports.

The 350 km-long line is an electrified passenger and freight express railway, with the fastest design speed of 200 kph. The project is expected to be completed within two years and will shorten the journey time between Budapest, Hungary and Belgrade, Serbia from the current eight hours to less than three hours. Construction on the Serbian section of 184 kilometers began at the end of 2015.

Miodrag Poledica, State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia, said the railway is a priority and the largest project in Serbia’s infrastructure construction in decades, which can markedly help Serbia’s sustainable development and improve its economic competitiveness.

Milutin Ignjatović, managing director of Serbia’s CIP Institute of Transportation, said the railway would become a safe and efficient transport link in Serbia in the next 100 years and benefit its economic growth and people.

Ignjatović said, the line will become a fast passageway connecting Southeast Europe and other parts of Europe.

Marko Cadez, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia, said that the Belt and Road Initiative will create great development opportunities for Southeast European economies including Serbia.

“Infrastructure improvement will boost local economic cooperation and lead to sound economic growth,” said Cadez.
