The public housing project undertaken by China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd. (CSCEC) has recently broken ground on Hulhumale, a reclaimed island in Maldives.

Liu Jinzhang, vice president of CSCEC, noted that the Belt and Road Initiative has created an opportunity for Chinese enterprises to go global and explore international cooperation.

According to Liu, CSCEC began to tap into the overseas market in 1982. However, for a long time, it could only participate in major international projects through labor subcontracting, which only brought in limited profits. After the proposal of the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese enterprises have been gradually changing from project participant to project creator by getting involved in the whole process of projects including design, planning and final implementation.

“Many foreign countries are troubled by production capacity shortage and technical backwardness, while Chinese enterprises boast high production capacity and advanced technology. The two sides can complement with each other in this regard and carry out deep cooperation,” said Liu.

CSCEC undertakes the construction of 7,000 affordable houses this time, bringing in a series of advanced technology to Maldives, including coral reef foundation treatment and aluminum alloy template construction technology, noted Liu.

“The project will greatly improve the residential environment in Maldives. Under the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese enterprises’ overseas exploration has not only brought economic and social benefits for themselves, but also improved the wellbeing of local residents,” said Liu.
