The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in conjunction with China have embarked into a programme of building houses for the people affected by cyclone Idai in southern Malawi last year.

According to recent Tweet by the Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Liu Hongyang, the ambassador had a meeting with Resident Representative of UNDP to Malawi Mr Shigeki Komatsubara on Thursday where among other things they discussed building 180 houses, with Chinese government assisting with 1 million U.S. dollars, with an immediate effect.

Similarly, Komutsubara said he had a very productive discussion with the ambassador on this program's partnership talks. In his views, this demonstrates a "true spirit of South-South Cooperation" and that he is most grateful to China.

According to UNDP, the partnership will provide flood affected communities with 180 resilient houses.

Cyclone Idai is one of the worst tropical cyclones on record to have affected Africa and the Southern Hemisphere.
