GLOBALink | China-built hospitals benefit war-torn Afghanistan
KABUL, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Standing next to the bed of his sick father in the China-built Mirwais Regional Hospital in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, Arefullah shows gratitude to China, which has lent a helping hand to his home country suffering from decades of wars.
"I am thankful to China for building such a hospital here decades ago that benefits thousands of people today," Arefullah told Xinhua at the hospital.
Built in the late 1970s with the help of the Chinese government as a gift for the Afghan people, the Mirwais Regional Hospital is the main regional hospital in the southern region of Afghanistan.
Initially, it was built to provide health services for around 400,000 people but currently, it benefits more than 5 million people. It has been commonly known as the Chinese Hospital among locals.
"This hospital provides services to five provinces of Zabul, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Helmand and Nimroz. But we receive patients from the central zone, the western provinces of Herat, Badghis and Farah. So this is the main hospital of the whole region," head of the hospital Nematullah Shirzad told Xinhua.
"It is a complex hospital which receives different types of patients," he added.
Similarly, the Jamhoriat Hospital is another major health center built by the Chinese government in Kabul.
The U.S.-led military coalition invaded Afghanistan under the excuse of fighting terror in October 2001, and abruptly withdrew in August last year, leaving many Afghans with injuries and poor medical facilities.
"In the Jamhoriat, we receive 150 to 200 emergency patients and some 80-120 patients for dialysis every day," medical practitioner Saadat Khan Zazai told Xinhua.
The Jamhoriat Hospital, previously having 110 beds, has been upgraded to a 350-bed health center by the Chinese government. Now, it hosts some 200 patients, Zazai said.
Faridoon is waiting for brain surgery in the hospital.
"This is the best hospital in Kabul and I am thankful to China for building such a well-equipped hospital that provides necessary medical treatments to patients," he said.
