Karamay confirmed deals to bring three major information technology-related projects to the city in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region during a signing ceremony held at the 4th International Academic Forum on IT-based Innovation on Sept 21.

The three major deals inked during the event were a strategy cooperation agreement between the Economic and Informatization Commission of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and Shenzhen-based telecommunications giant Huawei, a cooperation framework agreement to build an animation rendering center to serve regions along the Belt and Road, and a project to make Karamay Central Hospital a “smart cloud hospital” by integrating Internet Plus technology.

Among the attendees at the signing ceremony were 12 of China’s biggest technology companies, including Huawei, China Mobile (Xinjiang) Cloud Computing and Big Data Center and Shanghai Suxiang Information and Technology Corporation, demonstrating the importance of the new projects for their future development.

These three projects are also expected to attract more IT-related companies to set up in Karamay, and should act as a spur to similar projects integrating IT with traditional industries in Xinjiang as part of the Internet Plus strategy.

Li Chunyang, secretary of the Xinjiang Association for Science and Technology, hosted the ceremony and delivered a speech, noting that these projects are expected to have a great and far-reaching influence on the informatization of Xinjiang’s economy, and even the country.

Since its launch in 2010, the forum has developed into one of the most important platforms for exchanging ideas on the development of information-based industries in China. This year, the forum highlighted frontier technology in the oil industry and skills that are urgently needed, with discussions around the theme “Smart City and Digital Oilfield”.
