China has opened its longest two-way air passage connecting Shanghai in east China and Lanzhou, northwest China's Gansu Province, on September 14.

The air passage, over 2,000 kilometers long, involves 48 airports in nine provincial regions. Six new air routes will be opened, eight adjusted, and five airports' flight procedure optimized with flights on 579 air routes also adjusted. In total more than 2,400 flights are affected, accounting for 18.5 percent of the daily flights in China.

The civil aviation authorities said that these adjustments will markedly improve flight safety on the air passage, while increasing the flight capacity in the region by 17 percent. Flight punctuality rates will also rise.

The airspace optimization of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia region was finished last year and in July respectively. The opening of the Shanghai-Lanzhou air passage marks the forming of a Silk Road in the air, connecting the Yangtze River Delta with the Belt and Road routes.
