Joint News Release of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar

At the invitation of President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, President U Thein Sein of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar came to China to attend the commemorations marking the 70 anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War from September 2 to 4, 2015. President Xi Jinping met with President U Thein Sein, having an in-depth exchange of views and reaching important consensus on further promoting bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation and deepening all-round practical cooperation and friendly exchanges. Premier Li Keqiang also met with President U Thein Sein.

China and Myanmar spoke highly of the traditional “Paukphaw” (fraternal) friendship between China and Myanmar, and both agreed that since the establishment of the diplomatic relations 65 years ago, the two countries have always adhered to the spirit of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and made significant progress in the bilateral relations on the basis of mutual trust, mutual benefit and win-win results. The two sides reiterated that they will continuously bear in mind the fundamental interests of the two peoples, firmly keep the correct development direction of the China-Myanmar relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, continue to carry forward the cooperation traditions of sharing weal and woe, offer mutual support and assistance in times of adversity, and promote stability and development of the respective countries.

Myanmar expressed its sincere thanks to China for its timely and effective assistance to Myanmar after the devastating floods. China is willing to continue to provide assistance within its ability to Myanmar in its disaster relief and post-disaster reconstruction, and is also willing to continuously support Myanmar’s economic and social development and improvement of people’s livelihood.

Myanmar expressed its condolences and sympathy to the victims and the injured in the recent fire and explosion accidents at the Tianjin Port.

The two sides agreed to maintain the tradition of high-level mutual visits and enhance friendly exchanges and practical cooperation between the parties, governments, armies, peoples and regions of the two countries. The two sides will promote a sustainable development of economic and trade cooperation based on the principles of equality and mutual benefit. Under the cooperation framework of the “Belt and Road” initiatives and the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor, the two countries will make coordinated promotion of cooperation in infrastructure connectivity such as ports, roads and railways. The two countries will give full play to the China-Myanmar Agriculture Cooperation Committee and the China-Myanmar inter-governmental electricity cooperation mechanism and strengthen cooperation in areas such as agriculture, electricity, production capacity and finance to promote common development and benefit people’s livelihood.

The two sides agreed to continue to successfully hold celebrations of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar, and earnestly implement exchange programs such as 100 Myanmar youths’ visit to China. The two sides will launch a variety of people-to-people and cultural exchanges, expand non-governmental exchanges, and strengthen friendly exchanges and cooperation in fields such as culture, education, media, sports, public health and religion so as to continuously increase friendship between the two peoples.

China said that it supports Myanmar to take the development path in accordance with its own national conditions, and sincerely hopes that Myanmar will maintain political stability, economic development and harmony among nationalities and in the society. Myanmar thanked China for its positive role in promoting Myanmar’s peace process and welcomed China to continue to play a constructive role in this regard. The two sides will continue to strengthen cooperation in border management and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility along the China-Myanmar border.
