Badminton for friendship, solidarity event held in Cambodia to mark LMC Week

PHNOM PENH, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) badminton for friendship and solidarity event was organized here on Tuesday to celebrate LMC Week 2024.

Held at the Phnom Penh Badminton Club of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), the event saw the participation of some 200 people, including officials from the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and diplomats from the embassies of China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as UYFC representatives.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, Meas Kim Heng, secretary of state of the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and LMC Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) leader of Cambodia, said the event would further renew solidarity, cooperation and friendship among Lancang-Mekong countries in the spirit of sportsmanship.

"Our celebration of the LMC Week today not only stands as a testament to our successful journey together and the monumental achievement of our inclusive partnership within the LMC framework, but also serves as an effective means to promote people-to-people exchange, friendship and solidarity through sportsmanship among our officials via badminton matches," he said.

"This event will contribute to promoting unity and peace and realizing our leaders' vision of building a community of a shared future of peace and prosperity among Lancang-Mekong countries," he added.

Kim Heng said Cambodia will continue to promote the LMC as one of the most relevant sub-regional platforms to support multilateralism and stands ready to work closely with China and other Mekong countries to continue carrying out the success of good cooperation under the LMC mechanism.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to the government and people of the People's Republic of China for continuing to play an active role in promoting sustainable development in the Lancang-Mekong sub-region," he said.
