May 21, 2021 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The friendship between China and Pakistan is "higher than mountains, deeper than seas and sweeter than honey", which has been tested for a long time. Over the years, CGGC has been deeply practicing the Belt and Road Initiative, actively participating in the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, sharing the comforts and hardships with the Pakistani people, fulfilling its social responsibilities and spreading positive energy, demonstrating CGGC's power in the friendship between China and Pakistan with actions.

Recalling the past: NJ Hydroelectric Project

NJ Hydroelectric Project

Neelum–Jhelum Hydroelectric Project (NJ Hydroelectric Project) in Pakistan is an important project within the cooperation framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and an epitome of the comprehensive and extensive cooperation between China and Pakistan in the field of infrastructure construction.

The construction of the project kicked off on January 30, 2008. CGGC had overcome a series of world-class engineering problems such as crossing the Himalayan fracture zone, construction of long diversion tunnel with large burial depth, convergence of underground plant with large deformation, construction of deep shaft, construction of river crossing section, etc., as well as unexpected situations such as mega flood, water surge in river crossing section and TBM super rock burst , etc. After more than 3,000 days and nights of unremitting struggle, the first unit was put into operation in 2018. The project has a total installed capacity of 969 megawatts, and will generate about 5.15 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, which will solve the electricity shortage problem of 15 percent of the population in Pakistan.

Looking at the present: Chinese technology has been rooted in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

CGGC has built a number of projects in Pakistan in the fields of electricity, water supply and other infrastructure, providing employment opportunities to tens of thousands of local people and improving their vocational skills. Today, CGGC's story in Pakistan continues.

SK Hydropower Project under construction

The Suki Kinari (SK) Hydropower Project is included in the first list of projects within the cooperation framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. It is CGGC's first overseas greenfield investment project and one of CGGC'’s two benchmark projects, and will solve one-fifth of Pakistan's power shortage after completion.

The project, with a total installed capacity of 884 megawatts, commenced construction on January 1, 2017 and is scheduled to be completed on December 30, 2022. The project achieved the first-stage river closure on September 28, 2019, and the second-stage river closure on April 30, 2021.

In more than four years, the CGGC people have set construction records such as "the deepest shaft group" and "the highest head impulse unit", and overcome construction problems such as ultra-long diversion tunnel, ultra-deep seepage control wall, adverse geological surrounding rock, and high-altitude construction, making Chinese standards and Chinese technology rooted in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Dasu Hydropower Project under construction

The Dasu Hydropower Project is the largest hydropower project under construction in Pakistan, with a total installed capacity of 5,400 megawatts and an annual power generation capacity of about 12 billion kilowatt-hours after completion. It is currently one of the projects in Pakistan with the most difficult technical problems, the largest total installed capacity and the largest total investment, and will effectively alleviate the current energy shortage in the whole Pakistan after completion.

Mohmand Hydroelectric Project under construction

The Mohmand Hydroelectric Project, with a total installed capacity of 800,000 kilowatts, started construction on September 20, 2019. The project will have comprehensive functions of power generation, flood control, irrigation and water supply, playing an important role in alleviating power shortage, improving food security and mitigating flood disasters in Pakistan. It is highly valued by the Pakistani government, and the Pakistani Prime Minister has visited the project many times.

True feelings: guarding the lights of thousands of families and igniting the light of hope

The friendship between nations lies in the people's affinity, and the people's affinity lies in the heart-to-heart communication. In the process of constructing a dam, a highway and a windmill, the CGGC builders in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor have forged deep friendship with the Pakistani people. In the face of the pandemic, the CGGC people and the Pakistani people have stood together and helped each other. At the beginning of the pandemic, with the help of the Pakistani brothers, the Pakistan branch of CGGC purchased more than 1,200 thermometers to help the motherland; at the most severe moment of the pandemic in Pakistan, the CGGC people actively raised donations for the local community regardless of their safety. In addition, the projects undertaken by CGGC in Pakistan have been advancing, bringing stable income and hope for a better life to local people.

"In this uneasy time, CGGC has brought extra peace to all Pakistani employees and their families, and I sincerely thank them. Thank CGGC for supporting all Pakistani employees and for the help it has given to the local community. A big Thank You to you all," said an employee from the CGGC Pakistan branch. CGGC is the acronym of China Gezhouba Group Corporation.

SK Project Department distributes food to local poor families

Over the years, the CGGC people in Pakistan have been actively supporting local education, infrastructure construction and other public welfare undertakings. They have supported the construction of a boys' high school in Muzaffarabad and carried out social responsibility activities such as the afforestation activity of "beautifying the banks of Kunhar River and building a green power station" and the students aid activity of "caring for the flowers of friendship and passing on the friendship between China and Pakistan", setting up a good social image for Chinese enterprises in Pakistan.

Guarding the lights of thousands of families and igniting the light of hope. CGGC contributes to the friendship between China and Pakistan with practical actions.
