Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Offering his support to China in international affairs, Anastasiades said Cyprus attaches great importance to China's international status and its role in international affairs. Cyprus also appreciates China's stance on the Cypriot issue and hopes Beijing will continue to play an important role in its settlement, he said.

Anastasiades also said Cyprus is willing to work with China on the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping to tap cooperation potential for the benefit of both countries.

Wang said China and Cyprus enjoy good relations, which have become a model for countries of different sizes and systems. China attaches importance to its friendship with Cyprus and is willing to enhance political mutual trust and support each other in issues concerning each other's core interests.

China has always held that the Cyprus issue should be settled through dialogue and negotiations on the basis of UN resolutions. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to play a constructive role in finding a solution, Wang said.

The Chinese foreign minister said China appreciates Cyprus's positive response to the Belt and Road Initiative.
