More than 110 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide, and the death toll is above 2.45 million as of February 19, 2021. For over a year, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on people's livelihoods, the economy and society around the world, triggering a huge demand for COVID-19 vaccines in all countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivers a speech at the opening video conference of the 73rd World Health Assembly on the evening of May 18, 2020, announcing that COVID-19 vaccine development and deployment in China, when available, will be made a global public good. This will be China’s contribution to ensuring vaccine accessibility and affordability in developing countries.

Over the past year, Xi has emphasized, at many international events, China's proposals for "ensuring the equal distribution of COVID-19 vaccines as a global public good" and "working to make vaccines a global public good accessible and affordable to people around the world". This commitment demonstrates China's sincere desire to build a community with a shared future for mankind as a responsible country with concrete actions during the challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
