KUWAIT CITY, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A groundbreaking ceremony for the South Saad Al-Abdullah City housing project by the China Gezhouba Group Co., Ltd (CGGC) was held in Jahra Governorate of Kuwait on Wednesday.

Over 100 guests from Kuwait's Public Authority for Housing Welfare, National Assembly, Chinese and Kuwaiti companies as well as the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait attended the event.

At the ceremony, Kuwaiti MP Fayez Al-Jumhour told Xinhua he hopes the South Saad Al-Abdullah City project will become a model project.

"Regular meetings will eliminate any obstacles to the project to ensure the smooth progress of the project," said Rashid Al-Enezi, acting general manager of the Kuwait's Public Authority for Housing Welfare.

The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted for another exemplary project in cooperation between the Kuwait Housing and Welfare Authority and the CGGC, He Baisen, CGGC executive general manager and project manager of Kuwait South Saad Al-Abdullah City Project, told Xinhua.

"We have always regarded Kuwait as an important strategic market for investment and construction, and are committed to becoming a positive force in building Kuwait," he said. "We will make efforts to build a comfortable living environment for local residents and make more contributions to deepening cooperation between China and Kuwait."

The South Saad Al-Abdullah City project is located in Jahra Governorate, about 25 km west of Kuwait City. Covering an area of about 64 square km, it will offer more than 20,000 housing units and a full set of amenities.

Under the contract, the CGGC will conduct earthworks excavation and filling, and build more than 150 km of new roads and bridges, as well as 975 km of pipelines.

Once completed, it will meet the housing needs of at least 150,000 people, according to the CGGC Kuwait Company.
