Folk art exhibition opens in Karamay

The 2016 Art Exhibition of Root carving and Paper-cutting opened to the public in Karamay, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, on Aug 9.

The exhibition will last four days and is comprised of more than 300 works of root carving and paper-cutting. An abundance of local artwork is on display and with more than 100 having been created by Xinjiang residents. The exhibition has attracted over 70 folk artists from regions around the country to attend the exhibition and display their art. The works are wide-ranging, vivid and showcase the wonderful tradition of folk art.

Root carvings featured prominently in the exhibition with around 200 pieces on display. The process of carving requires immense skill and vision. The finest examples of root carvings merge human ingenuity and natural beauty

Wang Lei, a member of the China Folk Art Association, believes paper-making is a wonderful tradition of folk art.

“Paper-cutting is a part of our daily lives. It is a normal folk art. I hope Karamay’s local culture enters an era growth with the development of the Belt and Road Initiative.”

The exhibition is co-organized by the Xinjiang Folk Artist Association and the Karamay District Committee. It aims to promote the local culture industry and provide a platform for local ethnic group's culture.
