On August 8, 2016, the State Council approved of implementing the Plan for Construction of Pingtan International Tourist Destination, marking that the construction of Pingtan International Tourist Destination has officially been upgraded to a national strategy. Now Pingtan tourism is releasing unprecedented vitality and becoming increasingly internationalized.

In recent years, with the constant growth of Pingtan tourism in popularity, Pingtan has grown in tourist number and tourism revenues year by year. The prosperity of the tourism market has been inseparable from the constant improvement in the tourism infrastructure system.

In scenic area reconstruction, infrastructure including parking lots, footpaths, tourist service center and tourist toilets have gone into operation successively, and the look of tourist areas has improved greatly. The construction of auxiliary facilities in Nanzhai Mountain and Shipaiyang scenic areas has been completed, the reconstruction of Jiangjun Mountain and Xianrenjing scenic areas is being advanced steadily, and the reconstruction of all the four scenic areas will be wound up by October 2018.

In the construction of the outward traffic system, Pingtan is speeding up the construction of the Pingtan section of Fuzhou-Pingtan Railway, and the second channel is expected to be open to traffic in 2019; in the construction of the internal tourism traffic network, several feeder lines lead to Shipaiyang, Jiangjun Mountain, Sea God, Xianrenjing and other scenic areas in Pingtan, and the scenic highway network extending in all directions has been built to further facilitate self-driving travel.

In the addition of lodging facilities, a number of premium hotels planned in Pingtan, including Pingtan Business Operation Center Hotel, Jinlan Valley Hotel and Love in Landscape Sea View Hotel, have basically been completed and will soon go into operation.

Increasing the diversity of Pingtan tourism, enriching island tourism and enhancing tourist experience is an indispensable move of Pingtan to advance the construction of an international tourism island. In recent years, Pingtai has made great efforts on tourism planning and key tourism projects, developed a wide variety of tourism products and met the rich demands of tourists in Pingtan.

Beigang Cultural & Creative Village has become the preferred destination of many tourists in Pingtan. After more than a year of repair and construction, Dianshui Fengyun Ancient Village attracted a lot of tourists from inside and outside Fujian during the May Day holiday this year.

Apart from flourishing rural tourism, Pingtan has continued to deepen the integration of tourism with culture, sports, film & television and other fields. Since launching "100-day Tourism Warming Action" last year, Pingtan has enriched night tourism and tourism types, and gained popularity among tourists.

In 2017, Pingtan signed letters of intent on cooperation with 10 enterprises, joined hands with the investment promotion department to publicize tourism products and policies, and coordinate all-weather tourism cluster projects throughout the year including yacht, RV, marine sports park, etc.

Based on rich island resources, Pingtan has introduced three international events: Pingtan International Forum on Island Conservation and Development, Pingtan International Marine Tourism and Leisure Sports Expo and Ocean Cup Pingtan China International Cycling Open Race, and formed longstanding brands; and has successfully hosted marine sports events including international regatta, open water swimming championships, beach volleyball tournament, kite surfing and diving. Tourism projects, including sea fishing demonstration base, offshore island vacation, cruise terminal and uninhabited island development, are under way.

With the advent of the tourism peak, tourists around flocked into Pingtan for vacations during holidays and festivals. The prosperity of the tourism market has boosted Pingtan's homestay industry.

With the deepening of the construction of Pingtan International Tourism Island, the tourism market continued to boom, with its key economic indicators growing rapidly. Last year, Pingtan received 3.8722 million domestic and foreign tourists, up 7.2 percent year on year, including 3.858 million domestic tourists, accounting for 99.6 percent, up 27.2 percent year on year; achieved tourism revenues of 2.904 billion yuan, up 46.6 percent year on year, including revenues of 2.861 billion yuan from domestic tourists, up 46.2 percent year on year; received 14,200 inbound tourists, up 31.8 percent year on year; and achieved foreign exchange earnings of 6.386 million U.S. dollars from tourism, up 73.0 percent year on year.

In 2018, Pingtan tourism has grown more rapidly. According to statistics released by the Tourism Development Commission of Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone, Pingtan received 1.2812 million domestic and foreign tourists in the first four months, up 21.8 percent year on year; and achieved total tourism revenues of 1.245 billion yuan, up 34.6 percent year on year.
