Chinese entrepreneur donates school requisites to Zambian pupils
A Chinese entrepreneur has donated school requisites to 50 vulnerable school-going pupils in Zambia who passed their 2020 grade seven examinations to mitigate the challenges of COVID-19 faced by people in the community.
The Chinese nationality donated 200 exercise books and 50 uniforms to vulnerable pupils who passed to grade eight in various schools.
Making the donations on Monday at Masaiti welfare center in Copperbelt Province, Wang Li was touched to help the children because their parents could not afford to buy them their school requirements following the challenges of COVID-19.
"I felt moved because these children come from poor families and the children have done well but their parents have no money to sponsor them," he said.
From Shandong Province in China, Wang, 46, who deals in agro-business and came to Zambia in 2009, said education is key to national development, adding that this is the reason why it is important that the education sector should be heavily supported by all stakeholders.
And one of the parents to one of the children who received the donation, Getrude Mpundu, commended the Chinese entrepreneur for helping the children with school requisites.
On education, Mpundu said that cannot be left to the government alone but that every one, especially those doing business, should come on board and help support the underprivileged pay for their education.
"This is a good gesture, we are very thankful for this Chinese entrepreneur, he is paying back to the community for supporting his business," she said.
She urged other local businessmen in the area to emulate the Chinese for the good gesture to support the learners.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Council of African Youths Organization also commended the initiative by Wang to help youths with school requisites.
"These are people we want in our society who can think of our sufferings, during this time when we are faced with COVID-19," said Gerald Mwewa, secretary to the organization.
