State Grid Cloud Open Day: Wonderful Journey from China to South America

On May 28, 2021, State Grid Corporation of China held a "Cloud Open Day" event named "State Grid: A Wonderful Journey from China to South America" and focusing on "Together for A Better Life". Through cultural exchanges, the company demonstrated its fruitful results in promoting win-win cooperation and friendships among China and Brazil and Chile.

The event consists of three parts: "Hello, State Grid", "From China to South America", and "Together for A Better Life". At the event, a comprehensive introduction was given to the business of State Grid Corporation of China in South America, and the audience was led to visit the assets of the company in South America such as the Belo Monte UHV DC transmission project in Brazil, CPFL Energia in Brazil, and Chilquinta Energía in Chile. The event showed how the company had worked to promote friendship, cultural integration and mutual trust between China and South American countries based on the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits to contribute to the economic, social, environmental development and people's livelihood of host countries and regions.

The event demonstrated traditional Chinese culture through Peking Opera which upholds the ideas and values of "morality, justice, integrity and goodwill", quite compatible with the corporate philosophy of State Grid, i.e. people-oriented, pragmatic, accountable, and mutually beneficial. The Opera show highlighted the values pursued by the Chinese people. Through the show, more than 40 foreign employees of State Grid learnt to paint facial masks of the Peking Opera via online teaching and interactive performance. The event improved foreign employees' understanding of the Chinese culture by presenting a real, multi-dimensional, and vivid corporate image of State Grid as a Chinese company. The event also featured instrumental performances from beneficiaries of the welfare project "CPFL Youth" from CPFL and the Mare do Amanha Symphony Orchestra sponsored by State Grid Brazil Holding.

State Grid Corporation of China adheres to market-oriented, localized, and long-term operations, makes further efforts to promote sound and quality growth of international business,one of the "four wings" to underpin the company's main business for all-around progress, and to build the utility as a benchmark company for the Belt and Road Initiative. State Grid and SGID have invested in and operated the backbone energy networks in 9 countries and regions, namely, the Philippines, Brazil, Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Oman and Chile. With smooth operation and management, those overseas businesses are highly evaluated and well received by local communities and regulatory authorities.

In the past 10 years, State Grid Corporation of China has given full play to its advantages in technology, management and branding to contribute to the infrastructure and sustainability of Brazil's energy and power sector. Invested, built, and operated by State Grid, the Belo Monte UHV DC Phase II marks the largest power transmission project in Brazil and a milestone for China to introduce its UHV DC transmission technology to the world for the first time. As a successful practice of the Belt and Road Initiative and international cooperation in production capacity in South America, the project was granted licenses for construction and then operation in the presence of the heads of the two states. The project was completed and put into operation ahead of scheduled and has delivered significant socio-economic benefits, setting a good example for China’s go-global endeavor, and has increased Chinese companies’ international competitiveness. The project was awarded the Best Social-Environmental Practices and the 2020 China Grand Awards for Industry, serving as a shining name card of State Grid under the Belt and Road Initiative and a good example of win-win cooperation between China and Brazil in the economic and trade sectors.

While operating overseas assets stably, State Grid Corporation of China has actively fulfilled its corporate social responsibilities, and sponsors more than 450 public welfare programs by using local tax incentives to sponsor more than 450 welfare projects in a long run, including the Mare do Amanha Symphony Orchestra, the Valongo Wharf, CPFL Youth, CPFL in Hospital, etc.. It has contributed to such endeavors as world heritage preservation, sports and culture in more than 220 cities and benefited over 110,000 people. Since 2019, State Grid has released its overseas CSR reports in Brazil for three consecutive years. It fully demonstrates a good image on behalf of Chinese enterprises overseas and has won the UN Global Compact's Best Practice Award for Social Responsibility Management. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 in 2020, in addition to fulfilling its duties in self-protection, the company has donated more than R$12 million worth of pandemic prevention supplies such as hospital beds, medical masks, medical equipment and food baskets to the local communities in Brazil, sharing first-hand information and experience to help with the fight against the pandemic. 

The Cloud Open Day was a grand cultural occasion between the company and its subsidiaries in South America amid COVID-19. It conveyed the good wishes of State Grid and the local communities to cooperate for mutual benefits and win the battle against the pandemic. Through Peking Opera, the quintessential traditional culture of China, State Grid had in-depth interactions with Brazilians and Chileans to enhance mutual understanding and trust, promoting cultural integration, connecting with peoples, and promoting the sustainable growth of the company towards a better life for all.
